As the end of Term 2 approaches, students have been creating
work to go home with report cards. Each one (in K-4)will have one or two pieces
of visual are in a protective sleeve to share with families. These pieces reflect personal preferences in
subject matter and medium. Some of them are keenly aware they will be sharing
and family will be looking at the art, others enjoy the creation process. The
following is a portion of the accompanying letter.
One thing teaching has
taught me is that children are
entranced by what happens as they create. Art making is
a process, and its particulars vary from artist to artist, regardless of age
and
experience. Why each makes what he/she makes, and what
it
means is usually
concealed in the pleasure of the experience, in
seeing paint mix
and blend on the paper – a brush circles the
paper touching it
with varied pressures, the splatters sprinkle
across the paper, again
and again making bigger and bigger spots.
The significance is in
the making and the explanation is
sometimes
seen in the faces as
the bands of color evolve,or the splatters
expand and mix.

Fifth graders are bringing home the polymer clay pieces each
created. Each made a “pot” and a second item of their own ideas. They will come
home in a decorated paper bag, with some artist reflections accompanying the
work.
